BOARD GAME BUG

I love seeing board gaming but this summer has been so busy that it has been difficult to get a regular recurring board game night on the go.

It has been great to watch strategic board gaming go from an obscure hobby to the mainstream. More and more stores are carrying great titles and more and more titles are making it to store shelves. I started with a few games like Diplomacy and Axis and Allies in in university. These days I have dozens of games from various genres and diverse mechanics like auctions, dice, cards and tiles.

Recently, I have placed my game acquisitions into slow gear for several reasons. You can only collect so much and they games are not getting played enough to justify the cost. The average game is about $50. In terms of value for time spend playing, they are a bargain but only if you use them. Unfortunately, after a bit of an inventory review,  I have to admit that there are a number of games still in shrink wrap. Most of them are expansions for games that I loved and wanted to enhance. Good intentions, impulse purchases make for cluttered shelves and some buyers regret.

There are lots of game review sites floating around the internet. My favorite source is the Board Game Geek website which is chinched full of great advice, reviews and player experiences.  You can get a feel pretty quickly on whether a game is worthwhile.

Another site that I value is the hit show TableTop which features geek icon Will Wheaton and a slew of guest celebrities who play full games. It is witty, fun and a great way to learn to play games.

I am eagerly awaiting the official opening of St. John's first board game café, Mochanopoly. Their Facebook Page has been teasing an August opening but last week the owners announced a delay:

"It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the opening of Mochanopoly Board Game Café has been delayed. We apologize for any inconvenience and to all those who have been looking forward to the opening of our cafe since the beginning of summertime.
We want to make sure the people of St. John's and all board game enthusiasts who visit Mochanopoly get the best experience possible and the board game café they deserve (but not the one they need right now). Thank you all who have been so incredibly supportive of Mochanopoly so far, we seriously couldn't have gotten this far without y'all
Please keep updated on our page and a more accurate opening date will be announced soon!"

I am looking forward to meeting more fellow gaming enthusiasts in a friendly environment where I can take a game for a test run and determine if it is worthy of a purchase!
