PUTTING THE BRAKES ON AI

The AI of the Matrix, Battle Star Galactica, I Robot and The Terminator might be on the doorstep

The pace of electronic breakthroughs, miniaturization and the increasing speed of computers is bringing the potential of autonomous intelligent machines closer to reality. Is mankind playing with fire? Are we on the verge of creating new life that will ultimately make human beings just another analog technology destined for the trash bin?

Stephen Hawking thinks it would be a mistake to create technology that is smarter than people.

"it would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate," he says. "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded."

artificial intelligence experts with a conscious - or at least with enough knowledge to realize what opening the modern Pandora's Box might unleash - have released a statement warning against a "military artificial intelligence arms race" that could produce an army of killer robots or "offensive autonomous weapons."

The Future of Life Institute says "automous weapons are ideal for tasks such as assassinations, destabilizing nations, subduing populations, and selectively killing a particular ethnic group," and without a ban, they could end up in the hands of dictators and warlords, becoming the "Kalashnikovs of tomorrow,"

Over 1,000 of the worlds top AI researchers, including top minds like Stephen Hawking, Tesla's Elon Musk, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, signed the letter the Guardian reports.

They warn that weapons that "select and engage targets without human intervention" could be "feasible within years, not decades," and a "global arms race is virtually inevitable" if any major power deploys such weapons.
