The mysterious deaths of three German men who worked with variegated squirrels has been blamed on a virus that jumped from the squirrels!
The rare Central American variegated squirrel was being bred by the men who died a few months after showing symptoms, including fever and weakness that eventually led to inflammation of the brain.
The latest cross-species bonavirus is being reported by LiveScience.
The good news is that the type of squire is rare and located in Central America so we do not have to fear a major squirrel -borne outbreak in these parts and the virus does not appear to be spread by human to human contact
