ANOTHER LIBERAL BUN FIGHT NEXT WEEK IN CARBONEAR-TRINITY BAY DE VERDE

With Humber - St. George's out of the way, the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador is moving onto the next thorny nomination.

The party has made the call for nominations for candidates in the newly formed district of Carbonear - Trinity - Bay de Verde. The deadline to submit is noon on Monday, July 27th. The vote will take place at an estimated 16 polling stations throughout the district on Wednesday, July 29th.

Once again, two new additions to the Liberal Caucus will contest a single nomination ensuring one does not get a return ticket to the House of Assembly.

Trinity-Bay de Verde MHA Steve Crocker and Carbonear-Harbour Grace MHA Sam Slade have said they are not happy about the loss of a seat on the Bay de Verde Peninsula which facilitated this showdown. Both are committed to  seeking the Trinity-Carbonear nomination.

Slade is the more senior member of caucus by a year. He, won the by-election to replace PC Gerard Kennedy in 2013. Crocker won a by-election in 2014 that replaced Charlene Johnson.

Unlike the race between Scott Reid, - St. George's-Stephenville East and Stelman Flynn, Humber-East there is some animosity building up in this contest. It was notable that unlike the aforementioned, the dueling MHA's in Carbonear - Trinity - Bay de Verde did not offer the media a collegial chat about the race.

Once again it will come down to organization. The better organized person will get to re-offer as a Liberal - the other will be dusting off his resume.

The nomination is like any other political contest for one job - it is a zero sum game - only winners and losers. There is no award for most congenial, most well liked or most qualified.

Two incumbent Liberal MHAs have been shuffled out of the running after being rejected in nomination races.
