The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis is facing Criminal charges for its handling of a priest who molested children.
Ramsey County prosecutors charged the archdiocese as a corporation with six gross misdemeanor counts alleging that it failed to protect children. While no individual church leader was charged, they say church leaders "turned a blind eye" to the abuse.
That suggestion is deja vu to those of us that witnessed the disturbing blight of abuse that afflicted parishes in out province. If such a cover-up or "blind eye" occurred in this age of awareness than the institution is as guilty as the priest.
Archbishop Alphonsus Penney resigned in 1990 after an internal investigative panel placed some of the blame for cover-ups of the abuse on him.
The charges are important in holding the archdiocese accountable.
