Cottles Island Lumber Company Ltd.has been an example of economic opportunity on the northeast coast.  The family owned business has been an innovative trail blazer in the integrated saw mill, secondary processing and exporting of wood products industries.

A fire yesterday destroyed the company's warehouse and heating plant. The company has halted production and the future for the 110 people employed by the operation is up in the air - at least in the short term.

A fire two weeks ago destroyed a crab processing plant in Cottlesville, throwing 100 people out of work.

These are hard blows to small towns that are considered fortunate to have local industries and local jobs.

The loss of these jobs is devastating news as the sustainability of many rural areas of the province becomes more and more questionable.
