“Cosmetically we’ve got a very good match
for colour.....We obviously transplanted a good
normal penis and the erections that the
 patient gets are very good."

Dr. Van der Merwe

Medical science has chalked up another first, a 21-year-old man in South Africa has received the world’s first successful penis transplant and accepts the organ as his own.

Apparently, the operation took place three months ago but doctors wanted to ensure the procedure worked before making the announcement. The man is sexually active and has grown into the new member, doctors had ensured the donor and recipient were of the same race.

In 2006, a Chinese man had a penis transplant but his doctors removed the organ after two weeks due to “a severe psychological problem of the recipient and his wife”.

The donor helped a number of people. They saved the lives of many people because they donated the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, skin, corneas and then the penis.

I can only imagine the psychological impacts of loosing your penis but it must take a bit of getting used to a new one.
