The Vikings are back in vogue!

An Odinist revival is literally erupting from nowhere the last few years.  Thor, the Norse God of Thunder and his mighty hammer Molnir is packing theaters for Thor and Avenger movies. There is the dramatic History channel super hit tv series the Vikings which tells the tale of  Ragnar Lothbrok and his clan as they terrorize Europe.

A modern version of Norse paganism has been gaining popularity in Northern Europe. Nowhere is that more evident than in Iceland where the Asatruarfelagid is erecting the first temple to the Norse Gods since the Viking Age. The Guardian

says the temple will be circular and will be dug four metres down into a hill overlooking the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, with a dome on top to let in the sunlight.

Why are some  people return to pagan religions? Perhaps because some  feel the Christian religion which they had inherited had failed them personally or was failing our people.

For years the lone semblance of the Norse warriors in popular culture was Chris Browns' Hagar the Horrible and his funny look at Viking and medieval Scandinavian life.

As an organized religion Norse-Germanic Neopaganiss dedicated to the worshipping of ancient gods and goddesses of the North ceased to be a major factor in the spiritual life of Northern Europe by the twelfth century. While the conversion to Christianity was nearly complete, mythic symbols survived – but mostly as secondary elements.

I noticed that in during the American Civil War, a group of Norwegian immigrants formed an all all-Scandinavian infantry regiment called themselves “Odin’s Rifles" The infantry regiment, the 15th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer fought for the North.

Thor was one of my favorite comic book heroes. When my brother and my friend Mark Scott were not playing Star Wars down on the slips and stages out the bank - we were playing Valhalla. I loved Norse and Egyptian mythology, although there was not a lot of fun to be had with Isis and her gang. Baldur, frost giants, Odin, Loki, Magni,Borr Vali and host of other were great tinder for young boys and our pre-multiverse imaginations. The Norse Gods were fierce , combative and fun.

Thor will be back with the rest of the Avengers  with Age of Ultron" which hits theaters  in May. Ragnar And Lagertha return to the History Channel on Feb 19th!
