I am really pleased that the NL Alliance for the Control of Tobacco (ACT) has joined forces with the NL Federation of School Councils (NLFSC) in requesting that that the provincial government in banning the sale of sales of e-cigarettes to those under 19 years of age and associated products to individuals under the age of 19.
Both groups released a join press release today outlining what action needs to be taken to reduce the serious major threat to tobacco control initiatives in the Province.
Research shows that mimicking cigarette smoking usually leads to the real thing. The NLFS has been encouraging government to implement regulations now before this gateway to nicotine addiction gets a hold on our youth
ACT feels that E-cigarettes pose a risk to public health because they have the potential to undermine tobacco control measures currently in place.” and we agree.
The NLFS has been trying to ensure inform the debate by writing the government, discussing the issue in public and seeking the support of stakeholder organizations throughout the province.
Health Minister Steve Kent was prompt in returning calls and engaging the NLFSC on this serious public health issue. Yesterday we discussed the issue, among other things with the Minister of Education, Susan Sullivan.
The one thing that I have been disappointed about, thus far, is the response from the designated hitter for the file, getting an appointment to discuss the issue with the Minister responsible for Seniors, Wellness and Social Development has been much more difficult.
We understand the provincial government is studying the issue. I believe they could be acting quicker and more decisively to regulate this scourge. At the very least the government could announce a ban on the use of e-cigarettes in public buildings and schools.
The Wellness Minister certainly could touch base and let us know where he stands on the issue.
Just recieved this e-mail from the Minister sent 25 minutes after my post. Gotta have faith!
