WALKING THE TALK ON MP EXPENSES

The Federal Liberals are continuing to lead by example.

Justin Trudeau is walking the talk on openness and transparency.

Members of his caucus released the details of their Fall 2013 expenses today. While Parliament puts MP expenses online, it uses  broad categories such as travel, staff salaries, training and office equipment. The Liberal leader has put a more detailed disclosure process in place for his caucus,

All of the expenses were linked from the party's website to the web page of each MP and senator.

Unsurprisingly, the large geographic expanses in traveling from this province to Ottawa and within the large ridings, is reflected in the fact that three of the top five spenders are from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Top spenders has a negative connotation. These MP's should be listed as the busiest or most effective. The need to be accountable and transparent should not lead members to think twice about traveling to events and meetings on behalf of the people they represent.

These are dollars well spent unlike the unacceptable largesse of free spending Conservative caucus members who routinely purchased high-priced business class airfares and repeatedly used public money to bring spouses with them on trips to Ottawa.
