My wife loves to watch movies and TV. I prefer to read, when the interest strikes.
Over the past couple of weeks we have watched a couple of really good movies that I would like to recommend to you.
The first came as a bit of a surprise. We wanted to escape the madness of another Saturday night at home so we headed out to the over-priced local Cineplex to watch The Wolf of Wall Street. Fortunately, it was sold out.
Our friends! Mary & Bob, suggested we go see the modern incarnation of the story of Walter Mitty. Frankly it was not on the list of movies I wanted to watch. Ben Stiller is not my favourite comedian, despite loving Something About Mary. I figured this would be another silly movie with a few gags.
Ever since my first encounter with Mitty in Silent Reading in Grade Three, II always thought of Mitty as a wimp that was to be pitied. Boy was I ever proven wrong. Perhaps not having any expectations meant that I could not be disappointed. The daydreaming scenes quickly get a little bit old but the magic comes when fantasy is exchanged for reality. Perhaps the cynic might not appreciate the magic which transforms this movie into so etching inspirational, making you re-think your own life, challenges and aspirations.
Sure there are moments of the worst melodramas but the movies highs eclipses that. It serves as a reminder to live, rekindling dreams and hopes.
On top of everything, not that I am a prude, there was no violence, swearing or nudity. Just a great story filed with ambition, laughs and hope.
The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty is magic.
I'll post about The Book Thief and Captain's Courageous later.
