HIRING FREEZE, OR NOT

Despite the Progressive Conservative Party’s clandestine propaganda program, they left hand does not always seem to know what the left hand is doing.

On Monday the Clerk of the Executive Council announced that the government was implementing a hiring freeze. Robert Thompson made the announcement via an email sent to all government employees.

The decision comes as the provincial government prepares for a $1.6-billion deficit. The clerk said that “through this process there will be difficult decisions.” and that  departments will only be allowed to staff vacant positions “if it is absolutely necessary.”

Tough talk for tough times.

Than right on cue, the do as I say, not as I do administration created a new permanent position. On Tuesday morning the same group of employees that were told of the hiring freeze received an e-mail regarding a new a new senior appointment.

“The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that Marlene A. Hickey has been appointed Chief Review Commissioner with the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Review Division. The appointment is effective immediately.

“The Chief Review Commissioner has historically been a part-time position. However, with Ms. Hickey’s appointment, the position is now full-time

Those front line employees that are facing a strike and/or pink slips were suitably impressed.
