I have to hand it to Harper, not even a leak prior to yesterday's announcement of the new lieutenant-governor was able to lead to an accurate prediction of the Prime Minister's choice as the new Queens rep for the Rock and the Big Land.
Someone leaked that the former CEO of the New Tel was going to be anointed. Folks in the media immediately declared it was Vince Withers. Turns out it was Vince's predecessor- Frank Fagan!
Nothing agaisnt Mr. Fagan, I am sure he is going to do the new role justice but the appointment is a slap in the face to women in the province. Newfoundland and Labrador has yet to have a female lieutenant-governor.
Many people expected that embarrassing wrong to be righted this time around. I think, considering the dozens of qualified women who could have been appointed to the role, Harper missed an opportunity to make history and show that women are advancing in this province. The appointment of a women to the role at the same time that this province has it's first elected female premier would have shown that women have risen in power and influence.
The Harper regime has brought with it a sharp decrease in institutional and political support by the
government of Canada for the promotion and protection of the human
rights of women. Not appointing a women to the LG' role just confirms Canada’s lagging performance in achieving women’s equality.
God Save the Queen!
