"President Obama promised to begin to slow
the rise of the oceans, and to heal the planet .....
My promise is to help you and your family."
                                                                                         Mitt Romney
                                                                                        Republican National Convention

The upcoming election for president in the United States and the health of our planet are inextricably linked.

I say this not because I think that Obama and the Democrats can change, or reverse the hastening global environmental changes that threaten to acidify our oceans, melt our polar ice caps, wreak havoc on our food chains, generate weather events of biblical proportions and leave future generations in another Cretaceous era.

I say it because Obama's promise of Hope has been unfulfilled. Americans are yearning for the glory days that he promised.  The days of being the good guy, of being the richest, most technologically and militarily advanced nation in the world are over.

America the great! America the beautiful!

It was and is a facade, a great marketing campaign  built on hope. The United States is the great paradox. In reality there has always been great divides between the rich and dirt poor, the false security of a "democracy"  that can produce a president who failed to win the votes needed to earn the office, a nation that has interfered in the economic, social, religious and democratic "evolution" of so many other nations.

The United States, the great empire, has been fueled on a Darwinist capitalistic model that in many ways has been a parasitic influence on the word. An empire predicated on greed, influence and hope.

Today's America is in decline!

Promises of Hope have been ravaged by relentless economic hurricanes that are only rivaled by the unparalleled environmental destruction. Americans can not feed their families on hope. Hope can not be found in food stamps or on the unemployment lines.

I fear that America no longer cares about tomorrow, it only cares about today. Mitt Romney is going to play to this desire for a return to the good old days of industry, power, jobs, wealth and might.

In essence, Obama's failure to ignite will Romney's mantra for real hope. The welfare state sunk the nation, only the Protestant work ethic and individualism works.   It will be a government of the rich, by the rich, for the rich.

Will greed and self -interest win the day? Will Americans embrace the profit at all cost approach?

If so, the planets demise will be hastened.
