It is flat-out torture!

No, I am not taking about watching Premier Dunderale on the evening news explaining that her government's high balling of crude prices was going to mean more belt tightening. Nope, I am in the midst of a frigging Kidney Stone attack.

I had my first kidney stone attack at the age of 32. Every couple of years they reoccur!  Attacks are very rarely short. They last for hours and there is nothing you can do but ride  through the gut-ripping experience until it passes!

Kidney stones are comprised mostly of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate. They form when crystals of these mineral salts get trapped in the kidney, forming a stone.

Leafy vegetables, coffee, tea, wheat bran, red wine and chocolate are considered trigger foods. Think about what giving up these foods mean!

For the past week, I thought I had a stomach bug, or I had eaten something that was off.  Digestion almost completely shuts down, and the body sets about eliminating anything sitting around. It is dam uncomfortable. You feel like you have been beaten up! Than there is the constant gas, nausea, and vomiting.

Sleep, forget it.

For those readers who think I am acting like a wimp, I offer this anecdote from  an American Medical Association home guide article on kidney stones: "I'm one of those guys that has tattoos in the most sensitive places and I used to get my teeth drilled without Novocaine. But when I had my kidney stone, I was crying". The person quoted, an American Marine!

A description that I related to was " It's not just the excruciating pain of a kidney stone attack - akin to someone taking a power drill to your lower back and someone else pulling and tugging on your urethra - but it's the length of it as well."

I wish it was the stomach flu or something I ate!

Sitting around the house, wasting an annual leave day, swallowing the odd painkiller and drinking beer on a hot sunny day, like today, is cruel and unusual punishment!
