The Easter Break was a rush for Kris and the kids. Hockey tournaments, swimming meets and kids birthdays made for a hectic time. The St. John’s Minor Hockey Association (Atom) sponsored our mega tournament which was hosted by the St. John's Caps.
The Mega tournaments structured in a way that teams play other teams of similar caliber after day one of the preliminary round.
Liam's team, won a silver medal. He was really pleased with that outcome. 52 games of great hockey, of which I probably took in 40 games.
The mega tournament concept is working well. The play is much more balanced making for good hockey and fair rankings. No team wants to be blown out or to run roughshod over another.
Arnold Kelly is the Minor Chair for Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador had this to say about the new format. “We believe that all players deserve a high quality and competitive Easter tournament experience regardless of their skill level. Treat them special and they’ll respond with lots of thrilling plays,” remarked Kelly.
It was a very well run tournament. Lots of compliments for the organizing committee. A core group of volunteers under the direction of a seasoned organizer resulted in a tournament that was in the black and than some.
The Easter holidays are the time annually that minor hockey provincial championships are held across the province. The year-end tournaments are a culmination of another great minor hockey season with forty-one tournaments held, over 270 teams and more than 4000 players taking part.
Steele Hotels continue to be a great supporter of minor hockey and were the title sponsor for the championships, providing each tournament with Gold, Silver and Bronze medal.
Liam's best buddy, who plays with the Celtics, picked up a silver in Twillingate. No bragging rights, just comradely.
The swimming meet went well. Aidan improved his times!
