Newt Gingrich's surge may be residing.
Romney was well armed, articulate and relentless in last night's debate. I thought his counters to Gingrich's pandering to local interests and Freddie Mac were devastating. Newt was outgunned.
In fact, even the audience seemed to be with Romney who hit it out of the park with the conservative base.
Former GOP nominee Bob Dole issued a release yesterday suggesting to Republicans that Newt would lead to an electoral disaster:
"I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway."
However, you can never count the former speaker out.
