Good news for Ingersoll Ontario, General Motors is investing $90 million to retool the joint-venture CAMI plant which builds the Chevy Equinox and the Suzuki XL7.
The planning and retooling work will begin immediately, and the project is anticipated to be completed in approximately seven months. It is good news for Ontario's battered automotive industry and the broader economy. The move will mean some 150 laid-off workers will be recalled. 350 workers were recalled in August in response to the success of the US Cash For Clunkers Program.
Workers accepted a new contract that will freeze wages for almost four years and pensions for eight years but assure production until late into the next decade.
I attended primary school at St. Jude's, in Ingersoll. There was no CAMI factory in town in those days. Just big empty farmers feilds on the other side of the 401. I have many fond memories of fall maple syrup and climbing huge trees.
