I just realized what a political junkie I am - as a kid my favorite three programs were W-5, the Fifth Estate and CBC's This Week in Parliament. It would open up each week with a picture of the Centre Block and the chiming of the Peace Tower Bells. This was before cable, so the weekly re-cap of debates in the House of Commons was pretty unique. Long before CPAC!
It aired from 1977 to 1982 and was initially hosted by John Drewery and later by Bill Casey. Don Newman stepped in when Parliament was in recess with a program called This Week which has evolved into Newsworld's Politics.
In particular, I looked forward to the exchanges involving John Crosbie, Brian Tobin and George Baker. Those exchanges were classic. Prime Minister Trudeau was great to watch as well. Then of course Mulroney came on the scene and the rat pack was must-see Sunday viewing for me. The nostalgia. Man, I was a nerd! My wife would argue that I still am.
Former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein will interview former Prime Minister Jean Chretien on CBC Radio's The House this weekend. Should be interesting to listen to a couple of old politicos being congenial with each other.
The House of Commons may be on hiatus for the summer but CBC Radio continues to take us behind the scenes in the world of Canadian politics.

Tell me about it. I'm told that as a child I used to idly hum the theme music to "As It Happens."
