MAMAS DON'T LET YOUR KIDS GROW UP TO BE JEDIS

On Saturday afternoon after a long hike the boys and some friends went down to the playroom to mix it up a little with the lego. My brother Mike and I chatted in relative peace and quiet for an hour or so until the screaming began. Liam (5) and Conor (4) scuttled into the living room, each trying to outshout the other. Liam was in tears. Conor had bitten him, which is usually a sign of his frustration, but is unacceptable. After dealing with the biting issue, I asked what had led to the blow-up.

Apparently they had designed some lego space ships and Conor's shields not only withstood the attacks by Liam's plasma grenades but a tractor beam sucked them into Conor's ship and he could shoot them back at Liam who had no defenses. Liam felt this was unfair because a plasma grenade can blow up anything. So he took some blocks (the shield generator) of Conor's ship. The dispute escalated from there.

Mike was barely suppressing his grin and I had clamped my teeth into my cheeks to hide my sudden urge to smile. Of course I had to broker the peace. Kids! Mike and I had shared many moments like this as boys.

Which brings me to the purpose of this post. Apparently a man who dressed up as Darth Vader has been spared jail time for assaulting the founders of the Jedi Church in Britain.

Twenty-seven-year-old Arwel Wynne Hughes attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones - a.k.a. Master Jonba Hehol - with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head. He also whacked Jones' 18-year-old cousin, Michael Jones - known as Master Mormi Hehol - bruising his thigh in the March 25 incident. "Darth Vader! Jedis!" Hughes shouted as he approached.

Hughes claimed he couldn't remember the incident, having drunk the better part of a 10-litre box of wine beforehand.

In the 2001 United Kingdom census, 390,000 people - 0.7 per cent of the population - listed Jedi as their religion.

They are not alone - 20,000 Canadians also listed their religion as Jedi in 2001.
